The Eternal Knot is one of the Eight Auspicious Symbols. It dates back to ancient India. The Eternal Knot symbolizes the perfect union of compassionate activity with penetrative, insightful wisdom, i.e., the mind of a bodhisattva. The Eternal Knot also connotes the transcendence of the limitations of time, hence it is the emblem of Bodhisattva Yoga.
Bodhisattva Yoga is a unique system of Yoga founded in 2003 in Brooklyn by Vivekan. He is a master level teacher of yogic practices - chiefly asana, diet, Dharma and lifestyle.
Vivekan's dynamic, breath-based flows incorporate an awareness of alignment with sun salutation sequences that build inner heat.
His style of yoga combines altruistic Dharma with breath and meditation, producing incomparable fitness and confidence in body and mind.
About Bodhisattva Yoga
Vivekan founded the Bodhisattva Yoga™ system in 2003 and the flagship studio - Bodhisattva Yoga - in Park Slope, Brooklyn in February 2004 (which operated for 12-years until February 2016) as a home for his unique system of yoga, Bodhisattva Yoga. Vivekan's difficult decision to close the Brooklyn location after 12-years was partly to free him up from the demands of personally running a yoga studio and to allow him to broaden his reach and expand his offering range in way of yoga retreats, workshops, teacher trainings, consultations, seminars and Dharma talks.
Vivekan began studying yogic philosophy in high school and started his yogasana practice as a New Year's Resolution in 1995 - with just a book for a guide.
Vivekan received his teacher training certification in 1999 in the classical style of Indian Raja Yoga, at Integral Yoga Institute (the longest running yoga institute in NYC), under Jayadeva - a direct disciple of the founding Indian Master of the institute, Swami Satchidananda - from whom Vivekan received his yoga moniker.
“I accepted the name Vivekan as a lodestar, for it captures what buddhist yogis realize in meditation, right view.”
Throughout the early years, Vivekan continued working with many esteemed yoga teachers while he maintained a home study of Buddhist Dharma, Raja Yoga, and yogasana. He cites his numerous, advanced-level teacher training studies with Rodney Yee as especially helpful and illustrative. Vivekan regards Rodney as a gem of an asana teacher.
From 1999 until 2004 when Bodhisattva Yoga opened in Brooklyn, Vivekan was teaching 7-days a week - morning, day and night - from the Upper West Side to the Lower East Side, from Mid-Town East to Tribeca, and from Brooklyn Heights to Bay Ridge. This rigorous teaching schedule helped Vivekan clock-in extraordinary hours of hands-on experience instructing all over New York City and Brooklyn, and helped him progress rapidly as a highly sought after teacher, all while giving him the opportunity to develop Bodhisattva Yoga™ and test it on his students!
Vivekan's teaching schedule of 7-days a week, morning, day and night, continued throughout the 12-years of Bodhisattva Yoga's operation in Brooklyn, until February 2016... True super hero schedule!
A bodhisattva is a being wishing to benefit all and thus endeavors in trainings to become Enlightened in order to do so. As such, Vivekan's motivation in developing Bodhisattva Yoga is to help others adopt and enjoy a lifestyle of physical and mental fitness through his graduated yogic system, all based on the bodhisattva principle of accomplishing Enlightenment with the motivation of infinite altruism.
Vivekan credits his personal mentor, along with His Holiness the Dalai Lama and other Buddhist masters, for inspiring him to develop Bodhisattva Yoga.
In 2015, Vivekan was very proud to be the Executive Producer of an EP of meditation music - "Universal Spread of Compassionate Wisdom" - dedicated to the long life and 80th birthday of who he considers the Great Teacher, His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
You can listen to the EP on iTunes, or purchase it in Hard Copy (CD) via REBEL POP Records. Hard Copy proceeds go to DNKL - Tibetan Buddhist Center for Universal Peace in Redding, Connecticut.
This special music release inspired the creation of an indie record label REBEL POP Records which he co-founded with artist Katie Costello. With his background in entertainment publicity, film and music, this was a natural progression for Vivekan given the opportunity... Along with the increased freedom that closing the Park Slope, Brooklyn yoga studio gave him. His approach to the music industry is no different than with his unique style of Bodhisattva Yoga - to help artists blossom, grow and reach their highest potential.
In 2007, Vivekan, B.S., M.S., E-RYT, founded Bodhisattva Yoga's Awaken Your Inner Warrior™ Teacher Training system - a Yoga Alliance recognized 200-hour yoga teacher training program. He is a Yoga Alliance recognized Teacher (E-RYT).
